Jan Holý



Violinist, singer, band leader and composer. Was born on July 30, 1948 in Ústí nad Orlicí in Bohemia.

As a child, he played the violin, guitar and sang in a children's choir. Private study of playing the violin under the guidance of prof. Bedřich Voldán enabled admission to study at the Prague Conservatory of Music, which he completed under the guidance of prof. Jaroslav Foltýn (member of the Dvorak String Quartet). Along with studying the violin, he devoted himself to the study of classical harmony and counterpoint with composer Jan Zdeněk Bartoš. After completing his studies at the Prague Conservatory, he continued his education in musical composition with the composer Zdeněk Křížek.

Thanks to the possible approach to the historical originals in the Premonstratensian monastery in Strahov (Prague), he also became acquainted with the menzural notation and historical polyphony.

Already during his studies at the Prague Conservatory of Music, he auditioned for the professional ensemble "State Song and Dance Ensemble". In this ensemble (in addition to playing in an orchestra, various arrangements and instrumentation), together with lyricist and writer Jiří Stránský, choreographer Gustav Voborník participates with his songs in the creation of the stage fairy tale "Scarecrow". This fairy tale for children was successfully run for three seasons.

A personal, very positive acquaintance with the conductor Mario Clemens enabled him to gain playing experience not only in the orchestra of the Prague Conservatory, but also to record film music in the Prague film sound recording studio where this conductor worked.

Experience with folk and baroque music and the ability to arrange and instrument for various ensembles enabled him to work externally with the orchestra and choir Bautzen ensemble in Germany in the years 1986 - 1989. He also gained his basic conducting experience in this ensemble.

In 1990, he founded his own music production organization. At the same time, he founds the music group "Ecce Musica". This ensemble performed regularly for many years in the Church of St. Michael in Jircháře, in the premises of the Premonstratensian Monastery in Strahov (Monasterium Strahoviense ) and in the Basilica of St. George at Prague Castle.

In 1996 under his leadership records this ensemble album "Bohemian Baroque Christmas Songs" (Sony Clasiccal) and in 1997 another album "Hortus

In 2003, he received permission to enter the music archive of the Prague Franciscans in the church of St. Francis of Assisi in Prague. Here he found and edited the musical material of the composer Johann Josef Fux Missa St. Ignatius. He performed this mass the following year in the Basilica of St. George at Prague Castle.


In cooperation with the Atrium Prague Concert Hall during 2006, three premieres of his song cycles "Shapes of Love" are successively performed. „Fragments of love“ - for alto and piano - to the texts of the ancient poetess Sappho „The Messenger of Love“ - for soprano and guitar - to the texts of Gothic, southern French minesengers „The Bitterness of Love“ - for baritone and piano - to the texts of poets of the second half of the 20th century

In December 2007, the premiere of his suite "New Christmas Songs" for solos, chamber choir,organ, accordion, violin and percussion was performed in the same concert hall - music and singing to czech christmas, baroque texts.

In the years 2003 – 2008 is a bass singer in the choir of the German State Opera Görliz in Germany (Rigoletto, Nabucco, The Flying Dutchman, Hoffman's short stories, Countess Maricza)

In 2010 he was awarded for his composition "Ephitalamia for Anna" at the 10th International Composition Competition in Jihlava (Czech Republic). This award made him devote himself to composition consistently.

On September 12, 2013 his composition "Silhouette of light" for string trio and actor was premiered during the Gold Crown Royal music festival. As part of this festival, he also meets the czech composer Zdeněk Zahradník and the irish composer John Buckley. This piece had six performances - the last one on September 16, 2023.
